Eating Organic on a Budget

It certainly isn’t getting easier – or cheaper – to live, let alone to make healthy choices with our groceries.  There are many ways we can eat better and choosing organic doesn’t have to break the bank.

Choices a little easier on the wallet can be as simple as buying things that will give you the most bang for your organic buck.


Changes don’t have to be huge to make a difference. You also don’t have to go “all-in” when choosing an organic diet.

Start small.  Every change can help, so start where you can make the most impact.

There are some foods that if you’re trying to go organic, and are watching the pennies, are the ones to choose:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Nectarines
  4. Apples
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Cherries
  8. Grapes
  9. Celery
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Sweet Bell Peppers
  12. Potatoes

 The Environmental Working Group (EWG), suggests that these foods are the best organic choices based on their higher exposure to pesticide. These foods are the ones mostly eaten raw or eaten in their entirety (that is, you eat the skin).  Therefore, it’s worth purchasing the organic versions since you won’t be ingesting harmful pesticides.

The EWG also provides a list of “clean” choices (pesticide exposure is lower):

  1. Sweet Corn
  2. Avocados
  3. Pineapple
  4. Cabbage
  5. Onions
  6. Sweet Peas (frozen)
  7. Papayas
  8. Asparagus
  9. Mangos
  10. Eggplant
  11. Honey Dew Melons
  12. Kiwis
  13. Cantaloupe
  14. Cauliflower
  15. Grapefruit



Once you’ve mastered the basics, got the budget chugging along like a well-oiled machine, there are other small steps you can take on the organic diet journey.

  1. Trying growing your own: one little tomato pot on the porch is a start!
  2. Buy when products are on sale or are in-season and freeze some.
  3. Coupons, coupons, coupons! Sign up for free flyer apps.  They usually include product coupons and these are great for dairy or other non-produce organic products.

Remember, you don’t have to eat organic 100% of the time to start. Every little change helps.
